DEBOYNE LAGOON

What we do

The Deboyne atoll system is another high-priority marine conservation area in the Louisiade Archipelago with an outstanding array of marine habitats, from seagrass beds and mangroves to steep outer reef drop-offs and oceanic passes. Coral Sea Foundation director Dr Andy Lewis has been visiting this area since 2008, surveying the reefs and advising the local communities about their marine reserve development, and a significant number of reserve areas have been proposed by the reef owners. Eight women from this area took part in our 2019 Sea Women of Melanesia training program, and with the easing of covid travel restrictions, our teams will be returning to this area in 2022 to deliver aid and survey reef conditions in the LMMA's.
